Artist's Description

Another monsoon thunderstorm hits the west valley. The White Tanks Mountains are dwarfed here by the size of the storm. Just judging from the picture, those lightning bolts must be at least a mile long, if not longer.

As I mentioned in a previous image, the monsoon storms in Arizona (especially the ones that hit near Phoenix) usually have very high cloud bases. This, combined with the clear air preceding the storm, flat terrain, and relatively low humidity, makes it a great place for taking shots of lightning.

This shot is a composite of two shots, similar to the old film technique of a double exposure. I liked the way this looked in color, but changing it to black and white seemed to make the storm seem much more menacing.

About Brad Brizek

Brad Brizek

Welcome! I'm originally from the southeast corner of Pennsylvania (just above Amish country), but I've traveled a good bit of the planet. I currently reside in Tucson, Arizona. I've been taking photos since 2006 and have been refining my style ever since. I have a particular passion for landscape, architectural, and transportation themes, although I've been known to do abstracts from time to time. Each one of my images has a story that goes along with it of how it came to be. If you're interested, please read a bit about how I got the shot or what the subject is. If you like what you see, please come back regularly as I upload new shots all the time. Thanks for stopping by and I hope you'll find something that interests you!
