Description
Map of Jerusalem, 1660s. This map is by the Dutch cartographer Claes Janszoon Visscher (1587-1652). The Dutch title refers to the holy city of Jerusalem, first named Salem. North is at left, where an eagle carries a key naming 40 locations shown on the map, including what is now Temple Mount (upper centre), and the walls and gates of what is now the Old City of Jerusalem, Israel. Biblical scenes include the crucifixion at Golgotha (Calvary, bottom left) and King Solomon's anointment at Berch Gihon (bottom right). First produced in around 1643, this edition dates from the 1660s, with a descendent of Visscher named below the map's title.
