Artist's Description

This is the massive temple of Todai-ji near Nara, Japan. Todai-ji itself means "great eastern temple" and boy is it ever. The scale of this huge building is evident by looking at the small people near the base of the steps. And it's completely made out of wood.

The temple houses a metal Buddha statue that is almost 50 feet tall and weighs 550 tons. The current temple was completed in the 1700s, but the original was built in the 700s. Interestingly, the current building is actually 30% smaller than the old one. Due to being constructed of wood, many old structures in Japan have fallen victim to fire in the past, which is why the stone ruins of the western world exist, but these do not.

About Brad Brizek

Brad Brizek

Welcome! I'm originally from the southeast corner of Pennsylvania (just above Amish country), but I've traveled a good bit of the planet. I currently reside in Tucson, Arizona. I've been taking photos since 2006 and have been refining my style ever since. I have a particular passion for landscape, architectural, and transportation themes, although I've been known to do abstracts from time to time. If you like what you see, please come back regularly as I upload new shots all the time. Thanks for stopping by and I hope you'll find something that interests you!
