.......................................................
Best time to visit Organ Pipe National Monument is from September through Memorial Day. It will be cooler during these months, but if you have an A/C RV, then anytime you can make it here.
........................
Land for the graded road through the Monument was donated by the Arizona state legislature to the federal government during Prohibition knowing that the north-south road would be improved and make contraband alcohol easier to import from Mexico. In 1937 the land was officially opened as a national monument.

On August 9, 2002, Ranger Kris Eggle was shot and killed by a suspected Mexican drug smuggler during a US Border Patrol operation. The visitor center has been named in his honor.

Colors in the Rocks in Arizona, have a remarkable range. It depends upon the time of day, if there have been recent rains, and mineral combinations in the ground. There is a lot of Iron Oxide, but it varies from place to place, so even the same conditions, in different areas, means different colors. In some peaks the earth is gray-green to an almost Emerald Green, will see if I can find one to upload. But it will take some time with over 37,000 images on my drive and hundreds of DVDs in storage books. Even back in the days of film, made over 10,000 exposures per year.

Lighting is controlled by Prior Planning. First checking weather reports to find out when there will be scattered clouds for the trip, usually seven to ten day forecasts work. Second, getting there a day or so, before the day you will shoot. Travel around the area, with a GPS. Mark on it locations where you plan to take photos.... Decide when during the day, the lighting will be from east or west that will create the shadows you want.... Then go to the places chosen, from sunup to about 10am... from about 3-5pm depending on the time of the year.... The most important sites, be there before the sun is up, until about an hour later. OR, from an hour before sundown, until about an hour after sundown... This time is called "The Golden Hour." The time of day we like BEST.
